COMMUNITY NEEDS

Community Garden

Growing a healthy community, one garden at a time.

Community needs

We have identified several needs within the city that the community garden is meant to address:

~  We have a large sector of low income earners who could benefit from the availability of garden space to grow their own vegetables.

~  We have a large aging population, many of whom have gardening experience, but no longer have the physical means of maintaining their own gardens

~  We have a strong and growing organic and farm fresh production sector that would benefit from the enhanced profile of organic methods of gardening.

~  We have some of the best agricultural land in central Ontario but we are a net importer of food. Community gardens will provide the opportunity to focus on local food production for local consumption.

~  Although we have a strong agricultural base, many of our citizens lack the knowledge of fresh produce needed to be discriminating shoppers. Community gardens will aid in the education of the public on the value of fresh produce.

~  Money flows out of the city to pay for imported food. Community gardens will help the city to keep more of our money benefiting the city.

~  We have the same difficulties that other rural municipalities have in attracting professionals and small businesses to establish here. Community gardens provide a visual example of the cohesive nature of our community. They also provide an attractive backdrop to the community.

~  Our city has had a difficult transition from small townships and villages to a municipality. Community gardens can provide the glue to bind the city together.
